May/June 2018

Hello everyone!! Hoping that you coped with the wonderfully early hot weather we had!....It’s not for everyone we understand - but it certainly gives us here at Rotherham Social Days, some opportunities to plan some lovely social inclusion days outside in the shaded fresh air!.. With this in mind, we have more varied supported weekly day trips and weekly outdoor activities planned for June 2018 ! - breezy hand fans supplied! and cold, iced onboard MiniBus drinks at the ready-in case of a heatwave!.. All to be enjoyed by our lovely RSD group members!

Soo...What did we do last month? … Y0u can’t beat a bit of Social Group Retail therapy !!, So shopping expeditions with plenty of cuppa & snack breaks was on our to-do list!!!....... Wentworth Garden Centre, Lakeside Centre at Doncaster and Sheffields Meadowhall, - both shopping Centres have great wheelchair loan services! We think is so convenient, - it saves packing, and makes room for other things if you’re in a vehicle too!..

We called at the Winthrop Gardens & Cafe in Bramley for a chilled out stroll around their landscaped gardens, lovingly kept by their volunteers, and to say hello to their Elephant & Gardener sculptures !

We also!...visited Conisbrough Castle & Museum, where they provide great Interactive Electronic Notebooks ! which is great to show anybody that is unsteady on foot, who cannot make it up the winding castle steps - how the castle looks inside on all tower floors. We tried out of course too!...some tasty eateries such as Lord Conyers in Conisbrough, a cracking carvery at Monks Bridge Farm in Dinnington & The Church House in Wath-upon-Dearne.

We visited also at around 100,000 visits per year - the Old Moor Nature Reserve - which is a 250-acre wetlands nature reserve in the heart of the Dearne Valley. In summer, the Reserve is ablaze with brightly coloured Dragonflies, Butterflies, Birds and Orchids. We had a most wonderful tour guide, who explained to our groups, how the mostly man-made Reserve evolved in 1889, and that there is around 70 different kinds of birds breeding. WOW!!

“The beautiful nature reserve has something for everyone, it’s wheelchair friendly with a lift & accessible paths, in their fabulous visitor centre, shop and scenic balcony cafe overlooking the lakes!! ”

Also to -Edlington...for a fantastic Vintage Tea Afternoon Experience where we are always warmly welcomed. We chatted away.. and created our own lovely decoupage jars & flowers handy-work….and finished off with a game of indoor skittles!

And…...what are we doing in this month ahead? Sheffields Winter Gardens & Millenium Galleries, and Doncasters Museum & Art , are on our travelling list!..It was opened in 1964 to display important collections of natural history, archaeology, local history, fine and decorative art. There is a large and varied temporary exhibition programme throughout the year, as well as special activities for all ages…..” We also are travelling to Barnsley for a visit to the Coopers Gallery with 17th-20th century painting collections and the deliciously presented Impressions Coffee Lounge. We’re visiting the MEERKATS! at Sheffields Aston Springs Farm & maybe a Picnic in their stone circle!... is on the list also, as well as trips to country eateries such as the Sitwell Arms to visit for a nice meal, a good old catch up & chit-chat and of course!..... our wooden retro table-games & cards fun!! PHEW!!!!!!

Our supported Local Visits & Activities are so varied! - there’s always something for everyone 💜”
